Alma Heikkilä's works aim to represent all that cannot be directly experienced through the human body's five senses. This microscopic world, invisible to the eye, leaves traces in reality and influences everyday experiences, determining their physical outcomes on matter.
The artist studies this process by observing how forest and subterranean ecosystems change in the pristine spaces of the woods around her Scandinavian studio. The works reflect, as if to condense the passage of time, the results of these invisible processes stretched over years on a new scale that magnifies them, making them perceptible to human senses. Thus, the slowness and microscopic scale, elusive to human comprehension, become works of art.
